At some point you might want landscape lighting that is not only decorative but also highly functional. By functional I mean it is bright enough to provides enough light to see signs or walkways clearly. Modern solar lighting can fill this need for many applications at a fraction of the cost of traditional landscape lighting. The savings comes from not having to run house current to a remote spot in the landscape. Lighting in this category can also double as emergency lighting for power outages or lighting remote buildings such as a gazebo or cabin.
The light pictured provides about the same illumination as a traditional 150 watt light. It will provide 8-10 hours with 4-5 hours of sun per day. If you need something lit for the first few hours after sunset, this will fit your need nicely year round in most locations. It costs about $400 and lasts for years with battery replacement every 2-3 years. The replacement battery costs about $30. For larger landscape features, solar billboard lights can easily be adapted to light large areas.
These systems are in the $3000-$10000 range. The low end system has 6 lights and will provide illumination all night under good conditions and several hours under all but very poor conditions. The high end system has 12 lights, with extra batteries and solar panels for good performance under even poor conditions. It will light a 14x48 billboard all night under all but the worst conditions. Obviously this would go a long way to completely light a typical home or small commercial landscape. |
