Bluegrass is also know as Smooth Meadow-grass. Bluegrass is native to Europe, Asia and northern Africa. Bluegrasses are cool seasonal grasses.

Cool season grasses start growth at 41 °F, and grow at their fastest rate when temperatures are between 50-77 °F, in climates that have relatively mild/cool summers, with two periods of rapid growth in the spring and fall. They retain their color well in extreme cold and typicaly grow very dense, carpetlike lawns with relatively little thatch. Bluegrass is a very important meadow plant, used extensively by grazing livestock like cattle and sheep. It has also become one of the most popular turf grasses in North America, where it has been re-named "Kentucky Bluegrass". This re-naming is not accepted within the species' native area. After Kentucky trademarked their name in 1990, many seed and nursery outfits that had previously referred to the grass as "Kentucky Bluegrass" began to call the product "Shenendoah Bluegrass".
